Foeniculum vulgare Mill., commonly known as fennel, is a biennial or perennial diploid species belonging to the Apiaceae family (or Umbelliferae, nomen conservandum). It is an important medicinal plant used in a wide range of ethnomedical treatments, including for abdominal pains, vomiting, arthritis, cancer, diarrhoea, and others. Extracts of fennel possess a range of pharmacological actions, such as antiaging, antiallergic, anticolitic, antihirsutism, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antiviral activities.
